So Long Summer, I Hardly Knew You

fall activities

As I’m sure many of us are, I too am sad to let this summer go. But can any of us really say that the season hasn’t been overly generous to us this year? There was so much sun, I almost got used to it (quite a feat in Washington). I hope you were as lucky as I was, and were able to take the opportunity to create memories with family and friends. For now, my summer cup runneth over, I’m ready for a full serving of what autumn has to offer.

With the change of the seasons, a few life changes are ushered in as well. School is back in, and the kids are hard at work preparing for the lives they will make for themselves. At the same time, we tend to buckle down and re-commit ourselves to work and other projects we’ve set ourselves to. As you settle back into the year, be sure to take advantage of the newly available fall activities that fill the season. If you find yourself with a free weekend, grab the family and head out to one of these fall events.

One Sky, One World Kite Fly for Peace – October 11 & 12 – Long Beach

As part a global kite flying event, the One Sky, One World Kite festival advocates for peace and is a great opportunity to visit Long Beach. The festival, in its 27th year, began during the cold war when Jane Parker-Ambrose traveled to Russia in hopes of presenting a three-foot diamond kite featuring the American and Soviet flags on each side of the globe. In Moscow Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space and the president of the Soviet Women’s Peace Committee received this kite as a symbol of efforts worldwide for peace and understanding.

Open Studios – November 8 & 9 – Vancouver

Clark County Open Studios is a free self-guided tour where local artists open their studios to the public and share how, why and where their art is created. This is a unique opportunity to visit artists and artisans, view diverse works and buy pieces specifically created or made available for this event. Mark your calendar!

Create Spokane – October – Spokane

Create Spokane is a month-long celebration of local arts and culture across creative industries and arts disciplines. With 31 days of arts activities, there’s something for everyone!

Festál – Year round – Seattle

Festál, presented by Seattle Center in partnership with community organizations, is a year-long series of FREE events that honors the cultural richness and diversity of the Pacific Northwest.  Festál plays a vital part in Seattle Center efforts to connect our dynamic and varied communities. Upcoming fall events include CroatiaFest, TurkFest, Dia de Muertos, and Hmong New Year Celebration.

Arts Walk – October 3 & 4 – Olympia

Come to Arts Walk in downtown Olympia and celebrate the arts in our community! Experience visual and performing arts in over 100 businesses by hundreds of artists. Special features include hands-on family activities, demonstrations and impromptu street performances.

With fall comes the reminder that every ending brings a new beginning. Whether you find yourself at one of these events, or simply enjoying quality time with your family at home, I hope that your autumn brings as much as much opportunity as the summer did.

Fall, you’ve got your work cut out for you, and Summer, it’s been fun. Until next year. Thanks for the memories.
